something / some things

yes: it has been almost one year since my last posting… just thought i would acknowledge that before i went on with this one.

anyway, ja + i built a silk screening station in the basement earlier this summer.
i am not the greatest at documenting exciting events as they happen, so i have no photographic evidence of our process. just some of the results.

 our first print ever –

some overexposed lines, but that’s okay ’cause we didn’t know what we were doing yet. plus we were just too excited, we just wanted to screen print something.

our first print on fabric (a request from my brother, rain) –

the first attempt was of a drawing called “sama sama” – a design consisting of fine lines, which made it a bit more difficult to perfect the print. overexposure / more missed lines.
we realize that we just have to adjust the exposure time to avoid making the same mistake.
but it’s okay, ’cause we still don’t know what we’re doing! and that’s the fun part : )
this is trial-and-error. we remain optimistic as perfection will come soon.

kultura piece preview

“in a moment” is what it’s called.

it ties in with the exhibit’s theme of Kuwentong Hinirang, which in translation means Chosen Narrative. “It has been said that the soul of a people can be found in their stories.”

during the CLUTCH program, i was told that i am a self-reflective person. well if you do end up going on Sat., you’ll see that it really shows through this piece.

check it out This Saturday, the 24th. i really really really really hope there will be a lot of sun. but even if there isn’t, come by anyway! there will be plenty of Filipino food, creativity to indulge in, good people and good vibes.

on/off/on/off/on

when we run low on inspiration and find that we don’t know what else to do,
we hit up a local Chapters. we did this last night.
ja will dig through the interior design/home improvement section.
i will do the same in the retail business area, fashion and art section.
and i can say that for me, personally, it worked.

i found the most inspiration in Maira Kalman‘s The Principles of Uncertainty.
i laughed at things ja wouldn’t laugh at… and somehow that made it funnier.
here are some pages i particularly enjoyed:
